For the past several years, white  has continued to win the car color popularity contest. This past year was no different.

According to a PPG Industries report, white was the most popular car color choice around the world in 2013, growing 3 percent to 25 percent. Silver and black tied as runner up with 18 percent followed by gray, red, natural hues, blue and green.

The results were similar in North America, with white leading the way at 21 percent followed by black (19 percent), gray (17 percent) and silver (15 percent).

Also in the report, most luxury vehicle buyers prefer grey, while minivan buyers trend toward gold and beige vehicles. Buyers of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) vary the most with white, black, blue, red and gray all equally popular.

The Future Looks Blue

Blue may soon be a close competitor to the color white in the near future. According to PPG, the popularity of blue is predicted to grow in North America, as consumers are likely to see a rise in 2014 vehicle models offered in blue. The report also shows increases in popularity of the color blue for certain regions and vehicle types. In fact, the popularity of blue vehicles, specifically in sport models, has doubled between 2011 and 2013.

Each year, Chrysler introduces new colors to its already diverse color palette to allow customers to customize their vehicles to their liking. Each color is carefully examined to ensure it fits within each brand by closely focusing on the brand picture, new trends in colors, technology and outside influences.

“It’s all about the brand. We create colors that will reinforce and accentuate each brand,” Head of Exterior Color & Trim Studio Jim Parker said. “For example, the Dodge Challenger is a muscle car and we aim to keep the heritage of the vehicle by offering lots of colors like HEMI Orange (above), ToRed and Plum Crazy.”
